Flight/Ground Instruction

THE Balloon Flight School

For flight instruction in the Albuquerque area. THE Balloon Flight School will furnish a balloon, an instructor, a crew member, propane, truck, insurance, and the cost of the FAA designated examiner for the check ride at a package price year round.  Our  rate sheet is enclosed for your reference.  Any additional flights that may be needed beyond the hours offered in the package would be at an hourly rate.  Discounts are available on training when purchasing a balloon  through The Balloon Flight School.

Instruction is one-on-one and programs are scheduled to meet individual needs. We can normally complete the training in approximately 2 1/2 weeks for a private certificate, and 3 1/2 to 5 weeks for a Commercial Certificate,  assuming good weather for flight training.  With our staff of highly trained professional pilots you can be assured of the best instructions in technical and safety skills.

Students should be aware that the program is very physical. You will be moving equipment weighing several hundred pounds, and you must not have any physical problems that would prohibit you from being jarred during  high-wind or imperfectly executed landings.

The FAA part 141 Ground School consists of three phases.  Each includes reviews and a series of quizzes to prepare your for the FAA written exam, as well as give you the fundamental background to be a safe pilot. Training materials and FAA written exam are at additional cost.  Materials average approximately $100.00 with the FAA written exam costing approximately $85.00.  The FAA written exam results are available immediately from most of the local testing centers. Note that if you already have a pilot certificate and just want to add the LTA, balloon, rating, the FAA written test is usually not required.

To obtain a Private Pilot Certificate requires a minimum of eight (8) hours of flight training through our Part 141 school. (Part 61 instruction requires a minimum of ten (10) hours.)  The majority of student pilots, without prior experience, usually take 12 to 15 hours of flight training to become competent.  For a Private through Commercial rating through our school, it is a minimum of 18 hours, compared to over 35 hours through Part 61 instruction of which 20 hours must be in balloon flight training.

We ask that you make reservations at least 2 weeks in advance. Since we schedule and reserve the dates for you, we ask for a $500 non-refundable deposit at the time the reservation is made to lock in the time block. This is fully applicable to training costs. Extenuating circumstances (weather, illness, etc. ) will be understood. Winter and summer rates differ and some seasons are better than others for getting your certificate completed. Please feel free to contact us for further details.
